Harry has (presumably) had enough trouble with the restriction against underaged magic to last him a lifetime. As such, he is as badly off as any muggle when the electricity goes off one particularly dark and stormy August night at the Dursleys. When he is getting dressed at the crack of dawn, it's far too dark to see colors. Petunia is waiting for him downstairs, Dudley has the house's only torch and Harry must make certain that he get two socks of the same color to put on, not to make Petunia's already foul mood any worse. Nor is he particularly inclined to carry more socks than necessary downstairs. He knows that the drawer contains 5 pairs of black socks, 3 pairs of grey socks and 2 pairs of brown socks. How many socks does he have to bring with him down in order to be sure of having a like-colored pair to put on?
